Workplace Discrimination and Recruitment.
“Discrimination in the
workplace happens when a person or a group of people is treated unfairly or
unequally because of specific characteristics. These protected
characteristics include race, ethnicity, gender identity, age,
disability, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or national origin.
Discrimination in the workplace can happen between coworkers, with job
applicants, or between employees and their employers. Whether on purpose or by
accident, discrimination, regardless of intention, is illegal.”
“Hiring discrimination happens when an unfair hiring decision takes place
based on a person’s color, religion, sexual orientation, place of origin, age,
or genetics. Disability
discrimination and racial
bias can also constitute hiring discrimination.”
Examples of workplace discrimination in recruitment:
1.
Direct discrimination: Direct
discrimination is when a person is treated unfairly because of protected
characteristics such as gender or race. For example, a person is not given a
promotion because they are a woman, and the job goes to a less qualified man.
2.
indirect discrimination: This can happen when there are rules or
arrangements that apply to a group of employees or job applicants, but in
practice are less reasonable for a particular protected attribute.
3.
Unintentional discrimination: this
can occur when employer policies adversely affect employees based on race,
color, gender, age, pregnancy, or any other protected classification. These
types of policies are neutral to the employer. But can directly affect an
employee.
4.
Harassment: Unwanted behavior
with the intent or effect of creating an environment that violates or threatens
the dignity of those in the workplace, hostile, disrespectful, humiliating, or
offensive.
How to Avoid
Discrimination in Recruitment
Discrimination
in recruitment is a real issue and it is a legal requirement that you avoid
doing so. Also, if you accept all
possible applicants, chances are high that you will find the best person for
the job. You need to make sure that you do
not make mistakes when hiring the employee. Here are some procedures to make
the right candidate for the appropriate position.
1.
Determine in advance what skills
are needed to hire.
When you call for an interview, you should mention on your job
board what skills the applicant should have and why you consider it important
to the company. The applicant will then realize the needs of the employer and
the potential applicant will apply for the job.
2.
Create job advertisement.
Focus only on the skills needed to make your ad work. You are
allowed to specify personal characteristics such as age, gender, and race only
if they are specific requirements for the job.
3.
Select the appropriate candidates:
When you select candidates for the interview, select only those
who will be interviewed from CVs based on the criteria and skills you have set.
It’s also important for you to diversify in terms of which platforms you select
candidates from. This ensures that you get a wide variety of applicants and opens
the opportunity for many more to apply in different ways.
4.
Get ready for the interview: You
need to carefully plan the interview and the questions you are going to ask. You should ask all applicants the same questions to
assess the key criteria; However, any questions that follow their answers may
vary.
5. Refrain questions based on
protected characteristic. Related to the
characteristic question that was protected during the interview should be
avoided. Age, disability, gender Pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or
belief, gender, and sexual orientation.
6.
Provide the task objectively. You make sure when the job is offered to the applicant
that applicant have fully met the requirements requested in the job
description. This did not happen because of anyone's personal prejudice.
7.
Record your all decisions and
results. You need to record the reasons
for whom you are hiring. It will always be useful for you to be aware of both
types of two-word expressions.
8.
Provide feedback: You should
explain to everyone who did not choose in the interview, and the reason for it.
Conclusion
Workplace depression can be
caused not only physically but also emotionally by the employee, such as
developing anxiety disorders, loss of self-control, hostility, or attempted
suicide. Perceived discrimination has consequences for both the employee and
the work environment.
