What is Employee promotion

“Employee Promotion means the ascension of an employee to higher ranks. It involves an increase in salary, position, responsibilities, status, and benefits. This aspect of the job drives employees the most—the ultimate reward for dedication and loyalty towards an organization”. (Barman, 2022)

An employee promotion is a recognition of that person's contribution to your company. Employee promotions can come in many forms, but generally involve some combinations:

·         Higher salary

·         More senior job title

·         More and higher-level responsibilities

·         Decision-making power

·        New leadership responsibilities

Types of Employee promotion

1.    Horizontal Promotion

Includes title and pay increase for an employee, but no change in responsibilities. These types of promotions are also called "upgrades".

Example- An employee who has been promoted from clerk to senior clerk.

This type of promotion results in more responsibility. This type of increase makes an employee a higher level with higher salary and higher benefits. Also, senior level seat is provided to the employee.

Example - A promotion is vertical when a canteen employee is promoted to an unskilled job, Vertical promotion will be a manager has been promoted as a director level.

3.    Dry Promotion

A situation where there is no change in salary despite increasing responsibility and status.

Example- When a university professor is made the head of the department, but there is not any increment in the salary.

Steps to obtain a promotion

Getting promoted is not easy. Promotion cannot be granted without showing maximum performance to the employer. These are some steps to obtain a promotion from any organization. (quast, 2015)

1.    Analyze your current performance

First you must list it, have you achieved your performance provided by the management? You need to give the best performance in your daily work and show it to the management. Only then will you be noticed by them. Then work hard and try to work beyond your obligation to demonstrate how you value the company.

2.    Try to understand your manager's goals

Try to understand the key objectives and priorities of your manager. Then work from the bottom of the list eliminating issues that aren't worth the fight.

3.    Conduct research

Find out the company's job description and confirm by contacting the relevant HR relatives

4.    Evaluate job requirements

Conduct gap analysis by overcoming each need and comparing it with your own skills, knowledge, experience, education, and credentials.

5.    Create your career development plan

For each gap you find, determine your action plan on how to deal with it. If you do not meet the minimum educational qualification to fill the gap, try to complete that knowledge first.

6.    Get feedback

You go and get the advice of a mentor and ask him to guide you to achieve your goals by achieving the promotion you want. For this you can select an achiever who has achieved as you wish.

7.    Meet with your boss

After completing all the steps above, meet with your employer and explain to him or her about the industry interest. Share your career development plan and ask for feedback on other actions you can take to better position yourself for that future promotion.

Conclusion

Employee satisfaction is a term used to describe when employees are happy and when their needs and requirements are met at work. Employee contribution is essential to achieve organizational goals and objectives. This can be achieved by maintaining an ethical relationship between employees. Employee promotion is one of the best tools for employee satisfaction.
